Basically this paper is made to fulfill the task of English course, but more than that we hope that this paper can be useful for all of us to increase our knowledge in knowing tenses "Simple Past Tense".

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
English is the International language. By mastering English well, then we will be able to communicate
with other nations in this world. In addition, we will also be able to increase our knowledge and
knowledge for the betterment of our nation and country, for we will be able to read English literature,
listen to foreign radio broadcasts, and watch movies, add to the insights of science other.
Thus, ultimately we can master the knowledge in all fields. Tenses are important in English education.
And also a rule in english. If someone wants to master the English well, then he should be able to
master the tenses well. Among other forms of tenses, in this paper we describe simple past tense.

2.1
Simple Past Tense Definition
Simple past tense is a tense that serves to show the work that happened in the past. This tense
understanding is almost the same as Simple Present Tense, only the time is different and often used
in conversation and writing.
In general, There are two important facts to remember in this simple past tense:
- There are hundreds of different irregular verbs (Irregular Verbs) with different shapes.
- The form of negative sentences and questions (interrogative) is different from the form of a
positive sentence.

2.3 Function in The Making Of Past Tense Sentences
1. State activities / activities that have
occurred in the past. Usually the offender in the sentence does not say when
the activity ends.
Example :
a. I
saw a movie yesterday.
b. Did
you have your dinner last night ?
c. He
did not wash his car.

2. Stating some activities that have occurred in the past. Usually the number of activities more than
one.
Example :
a. I finished work, walked to the
beach, and found a nice place to swim.
b. He arrived from the airport at
08.00 Am, checked into the hotel at 09.00 Am, and met others at 10.00 Am.
c. Did you
add flour, pour, in the milk, and then eggs ?

3. Declare the time period of the activities that have occurred in the past, Duration of time
described is usually long. It could be two years or more.
Example :
a. I lived
in Brazil for two years.
b.
Shauna studied Japanese for five years.

4. State habits that occur and have stopped in the past, This shape is the same as "Used to". Usually
we add time information like always, often, usually.
Example :
a.
I studied Japanese language when I was child.
b. She
worked at movie theater, when she was in junior high school.

5. State the general truth that has happened in the past that has not happened again.
Example :
a. She was
shy as a child , but now she is easy going.
b. He did
not like tomatoes before.

3.1Conclussion
Simple Past Tense function in verbal sentences : Usually used to express a situation that has been
done in the past and completed at that moment or to describe an event occurring at a certain time
in the past.
Simple Past Tense function in the nominal sentence : Usually used to declare a habit in the past but
does not last now.
Description of time for Simple Past Tense used is:
Yesterday (kemarin), last night (tadi malam), last week (minggu lalu), yesterday morning (kemarin
pagi), an hour ago (sejam yang lalu), two days ago (dua hari lalu), and so on.
3.2 Critics and
Suggestions
We realize that in making this paper, we still have many mistakes and deficiency either in our
writing or we say English sentences and words. Because we are not overseas people whose
everyday language is English. And we hope that we can improve in terms of writing and
understanding and use of English in everyday life, and useful in the future.
